Creating your own rhymes

I really feel that children need to imagine in their mind's eye without always being given a picture on a screen or in a book. That is why word of mouth stories and rhymes are so good.

Sometimes I would love a rhyme about something specific but just cannot think of one or find one at the time - like if I'm working to a theme, (weather, for example and can't conjure up a sunshiney song) or the children just start all getting into gumnuts or whatever.  Do you have a go to place to find new rhymes and songs or are you one of the lucky ones with a million in your head?

Sometimes I get creative and make up my own rhymes, usually adapting a well known rhyme like baa baa black sheep or twinkle twinkle little star.
I work in a playgroup for aboriginal families and realised we had no indigenous style rhymes so today I made one up. What made me think of it was that one of the boys was saying 'This little piggy' and he could not remember most of the rhyme so I thought he could just as easily learn a new one. So here it is...

This little wombat went walkabout
This little wombat stayed home
This little wombat had some tucker
And this little wombat had none
This little wombat went snuffle snuffle snuffle all the way home.

Please feel free to use the rhyme & illustration, done by Joseph Wolf in 1865, which is in the public domain.

Another resource I recently rediscovered was a poetry book that I had as a child with lots of short poems in a variety of categories like Insects, Animals, Transport and Nature that are child friendly. My mother must have given it to me when I was sick in bed as I remember spending many hours reading it and drifting in an out of imagined places, faraway lands and little animal paths.
